Wrinkle Reduction

Upper third of the Face: Botox

To modulate the action of upper facial muscles, diminish wrinkles and rejuvenate certain facial signs of aging.

A neuromodulator is injected into specific areas of the upper third of the face to pharmacologically sculpt dynamic muscle action. The goal is to soften muscle action and decrease wrinkles, creating a totally natural, more youthful and relaxed look.

Botulin toxin is a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smoothen moderate to severe wrinkles wrinkles in people from 18 to 75 years of age. The treatment with Botulinum Toxin is approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead and lateral eye wrinkles to form over time.

Is it just aging? Too much sun? Too much stress? Genetic predisposal ? In general, how skin ages and wrinkle formation is a complex process. It isn’t just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, hormone loss, damage caused by free radicals and sun exposure, and so on; it’s in fact a combination of many factors.

The lines that appear between your brows (frown lines), at your forehead & on the side of your eyes actually result from muscle movement combined with the aging process and the skin quality. It’s all about wearing your emotions on your face. Underneath your skin, your facial muscles contract, cause a pleating of the overlying skin.

After years of crinkling and wrinkling, those frown lines start to linger longer, deeper and can become more pronounced. For women, whose faces tend to be more animated than men’s, and whose skin is typically more thin and delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated.

Fortunately, there is a way to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, crows feet and bunny lines. Treatment with Botulinum Toxin (Botox) can visibly smoothen and soften moderate to severe wrinkles. An improvement can be seen within days and may last up to 4-6 months, although results may vary.

Before you try and schedule your first Botulinum Toxin (Botox) treatment consultation, you probably have some questions, such as:

  • How long will it take? 10-15 min
  • How long will the results last? 4-6 Months
  • Will it hurt? A light discomfort is usually minimal if any. The needles used are ultra fine and when necessary local anaesthetic cream is applied.
  • Will I still be able to make facial expressions? Yes of course, facial expressions will not be alternated after the procedure.

You will be asked about all your medical conditions, including if you have or have had: a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome), Diabetes, anticoagulant drugs, allergies to any botulinum toxin product, had any side effect from any botulinum toxin product in the past, a breathing problem (such as asthma or emphysema), swallowing problems, bleeding problems, a slow heart beat or other problem with your heart rate or rhythm, plans to have surgery, had surgery on your face, weakness of your forehead muscles (such as trouble raising your eyebrows), drooping eyelids, or any other change in the way your face normally looks.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant or breastfeed.

In addition you will be asked about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal and other natural products. Using Botox with certain other medicines may cause serious side effects. Do not start any new medicines until you have told your doctor that you have received Botox in the past.

Especially tell your doctor if you: have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months, have received injections of botulinum toxin, such as Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB), Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) in the past (be sure your doctor knows exactly which product you received), have recently received an antibiotic by injection, take muscle relaxants, take an allergy or cold medicine, or take a sleep medicine.

The day of your appointment. Allow time before your appointment for filling out forms and for consulting with the doctor.

No anesthesia is required, although your doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

The procedure.Your doctor will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. One 10-15 minute treatment—a few tiny injections—and within 4-7 days there’s a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows or eyes & forehead which can last up to 4-6 months. Results may vary.

There’s no recovery time needed. You’re ready to get on with your day! The most common side effects following injection include temporary localized headache that resolves within a few hours. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.
